Strawberry, Pecan nut, Feta and Spinach Salad

This past weekend Dad and I ventured to the launch of The Morning Trade, which is Durban’s new Sunday farmers produce and artisan market. We didn’t know what quite to expect, but I was hoping to find a few foodie bargains and see how the area has transformed.

Being the launch day, I was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of people constantly walking in and out of the funky renovated industrial building. I think Durban’s peeps have been secretly waiting for something like this to come by; I know I have! With Dad now staying in Merrivale, I am not only envious of the free-flow peak traffic he enjoys, but also jealous of all the fresh farmer’s veggies he has access to; veggies that are not expensive and of a better quality.

We breezed in looking briefly at the art works, but we were mainly there to discover the food stalls, which by the looks of things other people had the same idea. Once we entered the food stall side of the market, we found crowds of people. It was so busy that once we got into the “loco motion” train of people flowing around each stall, we kind of had to be selective in what we wanted to stop at and find a spot to not hold up the constant flow of bodies.

With Dad being an ice-cream lover, we had to stop by the Legendairy homemade ice-cream stall. Before we took another step, we stood out of the way indulging in the rich cinnamon and macadamia nut flavoured ice-cream. After our moment of ice-cream indulgence, we stopped off at one of the farmer stalls and bought a bunch of fresh spinach and a 10kg pocket of potatoes at really good prices.

I look forward to seeing what new stalls they will bring later on, and really hope more farmers come to The Morning Trade to share their fresh produce with us ‘city slickers’. Inspired by my walk through at The Morning Trade, seeing all the stalls serving fresh and colourful foodie bites; I got in the kitchen that afternoon and whipped up an easy strawberry, feta, pecan nut and spinach salad. With all these ingredients in my kitchen, I had to give it a go. So here is a refreshing twist on a plain ole salad.

Ingredients:
3 – 4 Spinach Leaves
1 Slice Plain Feta, crumbled
3 – 4 Strawberries, sliced
3 – 4 Pecan nuts

Dressing:
Drizzle balsamic vinegar & olive oil

Instruction:
1.       In no particular order, toss all ingredients in a bowl.
2.       Serve with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
